3,Generations - Soundtrack Review
4,
Sven Harvey
-------------
Fortunately Dennis McCarthy was chosen to compose the soundtrack to
the seventh Star Trek movie and to be honest I was really looking
forward to hearing his new music. The reason for this is that I loved
the previous Next Gen soundtracks and as luck would have it I
received the Generations soundtrack as a Christmas present.
The first few times I listened to the music I hadn't actually seen
the movie, which proved to be a blessing as I found myself imagining
what the movie would be like from the soundtrack. For me the music
invoked some very strong emotional responses, especially the opening
"Main Title" track as I pictured a champagne bottle floating towards
the Enterprise-B and smashing on the hull just as the spotlights
revealed the main NCC-1701-B USS Enterprise markings on the saucer
section.
In fact the whole soundtrack was the same, all counjouring up images
in my mind which actually made Generations something to look forward
to. The exquisite use of the choir in certain tracks (and I am damn
sure its the Borg choir too!) and many of the nuances in the tracks
just puts me in a great mood every time I sit down to listen to it.
Or rather it DID.
Watching, what I can politely say, what was a bit (read A LOT) of a
let down in Generations tainted the soundtrack somewhat. The scenes
that I counjoured up in my mind to fit the music were generally a lot
better than the real thing and I feel that the soundtrack doesn't
really fit the movie... It's a lot better than that.
What I hope to do is forget the storyline in Generations, remember
some of the nicer scenes and special effects and basically imagine
what Generations would have been if I had made it while listening to
this excellent soundtrack and as a bonus the extra tracks (16 to 38)
on the CD are sound effects which can help to bring the ideas in your
mind to life.
Just drop the CD in your player lie back and imagine your version of
Generations and have a great time. As a stand alone soundtrack to
listen and imagine to this CD gets my recommendation and a mark of 9
out of 10 but just try not to think about the movie's storyline while
you listen! 9/10
